Default removed before 6 years - chances with Experian?

Default registered in 2011 for £300. 2007 I applied for a mortgage with Ulster Bank (RBS) they said if I opened an account with a monthly fee I'd obtain a better mortgage rate. Monthly fee £10. I put £150 in account to cover fees then when moved house I forgot about the account. Fees obviously been building up.

Just checked Experian credit file (got rejected for mortgage from Halifax - lending £96k with £45k deposit house purchase £120k - due to £300 default).

Ulster Bank initially wouldn't let me settle debt as they'd written it off. After 3 meetings with bank manager they will now let me settle debt. However this default will still be on credit file. Doesn't matter that default was an honest mistake. Halifax has said they'll only reconsider mortgage if either default removed from Experian file or letter obtained from bank saying it wasn't my fault...well it was my fault so only other option is to try for removal.

Will Experian even consider removing a default (registered 2011) as it's for only £300 and has been settled?

Specialist mortgage was sought - looking to purchase shell property - i.e. no kitchen or bathroom etc so had to go to buildstore for mortgage...not sure if nature of house (worth approx £200k if habitable looking to purchase for £120k with £20k renovation costs to make habitable - builder went bust) is the reason why Halifax are being so strict considering we have £45k deposit and want to lend £96k.

Anyone heard if Experian will work with you please?
